Road closures and flood-related advisories remain in place across portions of Lyon County following heavy rainfall from earlier in the week.
A warning continues for the Cottonwood River at Emporia until 6 pm Saturday, with a warning for the Neosho River at Neosho Rapids going from 5:30 pm until early Sunday morning. Minor flooding has started at Cottonwood River gauge at Soden’s Grove.
The river went above the 20-foot flood stage before 10:30 am Friday and was last observed at 20.77 ft as of 4:30 pm. The river is set to go below the flood stage by early Saturday.
The Neosho at Neosho Rapids is approaching the 22-foot flood stage. The river was last observed at 21.49 feet as of 4:30 pm. The river is projected to go above the flood stage by mid-evening Friday and drop back below the stage by early afternoon Saturday.
Road closures remain unchanged since early Friday:

*Road 160 from G to J
*West South Avenue from H to 160
*Road A from US Highway 50 to Road 180
*Road G from 160 to 170

Noon Friday: WEATHER: Flood warnings shortened for Cottonwood at Emporia, Neosho at Neosho Rapids
Flood warnings have been shortened for the Cottonwood River at Emporia and for the Neosho River at Neosho Rapids.
Initially, the National Weather Service had both warnings going from Friday into Mother’s Day. Now the warning for the Cottonwood is underway until 6 pm Saturday, while the warning for the Neosho won’t start until 5:30 pm and is set to end early Sunday morning.
Minor flooding has started at Cottonwood River gauge at Soden’s Grove. The river went above the 20-foot flood stage before 10:30 am. It’s set to crest at 20.6 feet Friday evening and go below flood stage by early Saturday.
The Neosho at Neosho Rapids is approaching the 22-foot flood stage. It’s at 20.56 feet as of 10:30 am. It’s supposed to go above flood stage Friday evening, crest at 22.9 feet early Saturday and go below flood stage before noon Saturday.
5:30 am Friday: Barricades go up near Emporia as flood warnings announced for Cottonwood at Emporia, Neosho at Neosho Rapids
Moderate to heavy rainfall is over, but flooding issues have started for parts of Lyon County as a result.
Flood warnings will start soon for the Cottonwood River at Emporia and for the Neosho River at Neosho Rapids.
The warning for the Cottonwood River at Emporia is now underway until 7 am Sunday. The river was at 19.85 feet as of 7:30 am, just under flood stage of 20 feet. It is expected to go above flood stage Friday morning, crest at 21 feet by Friday evening and go below flood stage by Saturday afternoon. At 21 feet, the river should stay just below Kansas Highway 99 south of town.
The warning for the Neosho River at Neosho Rapids goes from 2 pm Friday to 10:20 am Sunday. The river was at 20.05 feet as of 7:30 am, below flood stage of 22 feet. It’s supposed to go above flood stage by early Friday afternoon, crest at 22.9 feet by early Saturday and go below flood stage by Saturday evening. If the river gets to 23 feet, it will overtop Road 145 on the west side of the river bridge.
Southern Greenwood County, meanwhile, remains in a flood warning until 1 pm Friday after estimated rainfalls of 3-5 inches. This includes Eureka and Eureka Airport.
Lyon County Emergency Communications says several roads and intersections are barricaded, including:
*Road 155 and F-5
*Road 160 from G to J
*West South Avenue from H to 160
*Road A from US Highway 50 to Road 180
*Road G from 160 to 170
Lyon County Deputy Danny Broyles is asking residents to be cautious, even with flooding expected to be minor and not widespread.
Rain totals for Wednesday and Thursday are developing. Here’s what we have so far:
*KVOE studios: 0.40 inches Thursday, 1.8 inches total
*Emporia Municipal Airport: 2.05 inches total
*1100 Constitution: 0.50 inches Thursday, 2.1 inches total
This comes as the Emporia Fire Department held several days’ worth of swift water rescue training this week. Thankfully, no rescues have been needed.
