They came from near and far to participate in the Gary Fuller Spring Classic show event this past weekend.
Close to 400 children came to the Lyon County Fairgrounds from across the eastern half of Kansas to be involved in the sheep, beef and goat shows Saturday and the swine show Sunday.
Leanna Rust of Emporia was among the exhibitors in the swine show. She says this is a busy time for her family because they are frequently at weekend shows. Rust says her hogs get walked for at least 10-15 minutes per day and are also washed frequently.
Mason Jenkins of Emporia says he had a good time showing swine and getting ready for the upcoming Lyon County Fair later this summer. Jenkins says it was important to recognize the contributions of the late Gary Fuller to Lyon County 4-H.
Fuller passed away several years ago after a tree-related accident. His family continues his tradition of buying championship belt buckles for the fair, buying prizes for the Spring Classic and funding scholarships for 4-H students.
Children came to Emporia from as far away as Kansas City and Winfield to participate.
