Tears of joy were streaming for Newman Regional Health Women’s Life Center RN Cassie Hammond recently and for very good reason.
Hammond was the first Newman nurse to receive the DAISY Award which recognizes nurses for their “super-human efforts” on a daily basis. Hammond says to be the first local recipient is a great honor and thanked her fellow staff for their support, especially over the last two years when it was essential to be able to lean on one another.
Hammond says with how difficult the last two years have been given the COVID-19 pandemic, having an award such as this that specifically honors nurses is very heartwarming. She says positive recognition of any kind can have a tremendously positive “domino” effect throughout healthcare facilities.
In a news release from Newman, interim Chief Nursing Officer Jim Reineke says, “I can’t think of a more deserving first-ever Newman Regional Health DAISY winner than Cassie; she truly exemplifies the spirit of DAISY with every encounter, every moment, and every patient.”
The DAISY Award is administered by the DAISY Foundation which was established back in 1999 by the family of J. Patrick Barnes who died at the age of from complications of idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura. His family established the award to honor the many nurses who cared for Barnes during his battle with the disease.
