Emporia’s Sixth Avenue water line replacement project is shifting into its second phase beginning next week.
The roughly three-week project involves water extensions from the main line in the center lane to the south side of Sixth as well as side street connections.
City Engineer Jim Ubert explains the upcoming traffic flow for eastbound traffic:
Ubert says there will be no construction in the center turn lane at some point in time next week, meaning the outside eastbound lane will be available for traffic and the major construction work for Phase 2 shifts to the inside eastbound lane. Two or three side street intersections on the south side of Sixth will be closed at a time, but not all the side streets between Woodland and Lincoln will be closed simultaneously.
The plan is to keep side street intersections open where the city contractor is not working — and the contractor cannot work on all the side street connections at the same time.
The final phase of the project, also tentatively set to last three weeks, will involve connections on the north side of the street affecting westbound traffic. Ubert says the same process will apply.
