As Lyon County Commissioners continue overhearing appropriation requests for the 2023 fiscal year, the commission has approved a significant allocation to assist with local job growth.
During its regular action meeting Thursday morning, the commission approved a $375,000 appropriation and two letters of support for Emporia Main Street. Main Street is currently seeking an Economic Development Agency grant to create a tech accelerator to increase tech-based jobs across the local region.
Main Street Director Casey Woods says there is a significant need for jobs of this nature and commissioner’s actions Thursday reflect their awareness of that need.
The county’s appropriation follows similar action by Emporia City Commissioners last week. A timeline for the grant application process has not yet been announced.
In other business, commissioners overheard the allocation request from Newman Regional Health for 2023. According to Newman CEO Bob Wright, the hospital is seeking $400,000.
As in years past, Wright says the allocation, if granted, will go towards capital equipment purchases.
Newman’s allocation request followed requests from Emporia Main Street, the North Lyon County Senior Center, Lyon County Conservation District and the County Register of Deeds office Wednesday.
The Lyon County Commission will reconvene for a study session next Wednesday at 9 am inside the Lyon County Courthouse.
