It’s beginning to feel a lot like summer.
The National Weather Service has issued a pair of heat advisories covering the entire KVOE listening area. Lyon, Coffey, Morris, Osage and Wabaunsee counties are in an advisory from 1 pm to 9 pm Sunday while Chase and Greenwood counties are in a separate warning from 1 pm to 8 pm Sunday.
Forecasts are calling for high temperatures in the mid to upper 90’s throughout the day with heat index values as high as 110 possible. Residents should take precautions to beat the heat over the coming week such as drinking lots of water, staying in air conditioning as much as possible and changing your work schedule if needed to handle the most strenuous activities in the morning or evening.
Also, keep a close eye on young and old alike. Children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles when it’s this hot.

1:09 pm Saturday: Strong thunderstorms possible late Saturday into Sunday morning
The KVOE listening area could see its latest round of severe weather Saturday evening.
The majority of the listening area is currently in a slight risk category with all hazards possible, although high winds and hail will be the major concerns. The northern portion of Lyon and areas further north currently in the risk area, however, Emporia is right on the fringe of the box.
The risk comes just a day after strong thunderstorms caused a significant outage to more than 300 Evergy customers in Admire, Miller and Reading in northeast Lyon County as well as some customers in western Osage County.
The bulk of the outage developed after storms downed five power poles near Reading. Additionally, storms also knocked down a number of tree limbs, including some estimated at 4-5 inches in diameter, and caused damage to at least one truckport along Kansas Highway 170 on the Lyon-Osage County line just outside Reading. A second shed was reported damaged outside Reading and a shed was destroyed just north of Lebo.
