O’l Glory turns 245 Tuesday and several local groups have activities on the community calendar for the occasion.
American Legion Post 5 will be welcoming the public for a Flag Day celebration beginning at 5:30 pm. Post commander Clay Childs says they want Tuesday to be an “all American day.”
Childs also reminds residents the legion has a flag disposal box that is available year-round where residents can drop off their flags in need of retirement. For those who may be in need of a new flag, Childs says they will have flags available during Tuesday’s activities.
At the same time, the Emporia Lions Club will be commemorating Flag Day at the overpass on Road S between Roads 170 and 175 beginning at 4 pm. Club Member Gary Post says they will have between 20-25 flags flying on the overpass in cooperation with the Emporia Patriot Guard Riders.
Club member Gary Post says this project originally began as a way to commemorate the club’s 100-year presence in the local community.
Community members are invited to bring their flags and join in the day’s festivities.
As if that weren’t enough, the Veterans of Foreign Wars post 1980 is also hosting a flag day BBQ dinner from 4 to 8 pm Tuesday. Meals include a smoked brisket sandwich, baked beans, cheesy potatoes and a dessert.
Meals cost $12 and all residents will receive a free 8×12 USA flag.
