Motorists passing under the overpass at Road S between Roads 170 and 175 may have noticed a very patriotic display thanks to the Emporia Lions Club and Emporia Patriot Guard Riders. The American Legion was holding a celebration of its own at the same time with a community barbecue and formal flag retirement ceremony Tuesday evening. Local veteran and Legion Adjudant Ron Whitney says Flag Day is not only about celebrating Old Glory, but also those who have fought to defend it.
Just down the street from the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1980 was welcoming all visitors for a Flag Day barbecue dinner as well. Along with a smoked brisket sandwich meal, residents also took home a free 8×12 flag.
