Emporia State University and Flint Hills Technical College will be receiving sizeable allocations from the Lyon County Commission.
During their weekly action meeting, commissioners approved budgeted allocations of $250,000 to ESU and $60,400 to FHTC. The ESU request is unchanged from the last five years and will go to support scholarships for students.
Meanwhile, the FHTC request is up by $400 from last year with the college planning to put those dollars towards the welding department. Given its notoriety and the amount of interest expressed in the department, Lyon County Commission Chairman Rollie Martin says the allocation is a worthy investment.
In other business, commissioners received their latest round of 2023 budget allocation requests from four local agencies. Ty Wheeler of Kansas Legal Services submitted a request of $15,000.
The Lyon County Fair Board submitted a request of $60,000, unchanged from last year’s request. Lyon County Sheriff Jeff Cope submitted a total request of $7 million which is a 9.8 percent increase from 2022 while the Olpe Senior Center requested $5,360 up from last year’s request of $4,280.
All requests have been taken under consideration as work to develop the 2023 budget continues.
A request from County Engineer Chip Woods to approve a quote from Foley Equipment Company for a used 2017 Caterpillar Motor Grader for a cost of just over $161,000 also gained unanimous approval.
Lyon County Commissioners will reconvene for their weekly action meeting next Thursday at 9 am inside the Lyon County Courthouse Commission Chambers.
