Street repairs are coming relatively soon to Prairie Street after major water main breaks north of 12th earlier this week.
A water main broke near Park on the Fourth of July, followed by a break south of 18th early Tuesday. On KVOE’s Morning Show on Wednesday, Public Works Director Dean Grant said cutout zones should be fixed within a few days after “flowable fill” sets up.
Traffic is currently blocked on Prairie from 12th to 15th, but it is allowed north of 15th. Drivers will have to work around the cutout zone near 18th until it’s filled.
Grant says a 20-inch cast-iron pipe was involved.
Grant says work after the massive 2017 water main break in the same area of town helped the city get water shut off quickly and helped to avoid a huge loss of water. He also credited Underground Utilities staff for their work to get both situations resolved as soon as possible.
The city is in the middle of design work on a new 24-inch line from the Water Treatment Plant near 24th and Industrial, which will go east to 24th and south to Prairie. Grant says the recent water main issues won’t alter that project’s timetable.
