As the primary election draws closer, criminal activity involving political signs continues to be noted to the community, if not reported to authorities.
Just a handful of political signs have been stolen since June 28, according to Emporia Police. However, several signs, including large signs on both church and private property, have been vandalized in town this week. Police Capt. Ray Mattas says the criminal damage incidents are not being reported to officers for investigation as of mid-morning Wednesday.
Sign theft is a Class A misdemeanor, with a maximum sentence of one year in jail and a fine of up to $2,500. Vandalism is a Class B misdemeanor punishable by up to six months in jail and a fine of up to $1,500.
