US Second District Congressman Jake LaTurner is already familiar with area residents in Coffey and Osage counties. He’s also getting familiar with residents across much of the KVOE listening area before the upcoming general election.
LaTurner joined KVOE’s Morning Show on Wednesday, in part to introduce himself to residents in Lyon, Chase, Morris and Wabaunsee counties and in part to talk about issues like abortion rights, civil rights and inflation impact. LaTurner applauded the recent US Supreme Court decision reversing Roe v Wade, and he says concerns from residents and lawmakers about diminishing women’s rights — and a spillover into diminishing civil rights as a whole — are unfounded.
LaTurner faulted the Biden administration for its monetary policy as inflation continues at levels not seen in 40 years. He admits both the Biden and Trump administrations spent a lot of money to stave off economic collapse during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, but he says that policy should have changed as the economy regained its footing.
LaTurner, a Republican, is the US House Second District incumbent and is facing Democrat Patrick Schmidt in the general election. The Second District will expand beyond Coffey and Osage counties to include Lyon, Chase, Morris and Wabaunsee counties after redistricting by the Kansas Legislature earlier this year.
