Oppressive heat will be continuing through Saturday with chances for cooler temperatures to close out the weekend.
A heat advisory for Lyon, Coffey, Chase, Greenwood and Osage counties now goes until 8 pm Sunday. A separate advisory for Morris and Wabaunsee counties continues until 9 pm Saturday.
Temperatures are expected to exceed 100 degrees Saturday with a high of 101 forecasted and heat index values between 102 to 108 degrees possible. The National Weather Service encourages residents to spend lots of time in air-conditioned or shaded areas or avoid the heat altogether if possible.
If you have to be outdoors for any reason, be sure to drink plenty of water, take frequent breaks if engaging in strenuous activities, wear light loose fitting clothing and move the most strenuous work to the morning or evening hours if possible. Storm chances could bring a short reprieve from the high temperatures beginning Sunday with scattered showers and thunderstorms forecasted in the afternoon hours continuing into the upcoming work week with high temperatures in the mid to upper 90s forecasted for the majority of the week.
