As the primary election officially draws near, there have been complaints of either theft or damage to political signs. Reports to Emporia Police have been minimal this election cycle.
Emporia Police Capt. Ray Mattas says there have been less than 20 reports of theft or criminal damage since June 1. Most of the stolen or damaged signs have been supporting House Concurrent Resolution 5003, otherwise known as the Value Them Both constitutional amendment that would have state lawmakers regulate abortion rights through legislative action and would essentially overrule the Kansas Supreme Court’s decision several years ago saying there is a constitutional right to abortion in Kansas.
Sign theft is a Class A misdemeanor, with a maximum sentence of one year in jail and a fine of up to $2,500. Vandalism is a Class B misdemeanor punishable by up to six months in jail and a fine of up to $1,500.
