As the city of Emporia’s logo redesign process continues, residents continue to ask questions about two unrelated projects.
City Communications Manager Christine Johnson, a guest on KVOE’s Morning Show this week, says the work towards a new logo has no bearing on the project renovating the elevated water storage tank on East 12th Avenue near Dillons.
Water tower renovations will take place next year. The reconditioning process, which will include emptying the tank, removing the interior coating, some “structure modifications” and then a multi-step coating process, will ensure the city’s water quality while revitalizing the tank’s outward appearance. Besides extending the tanl’s life by 20 years or more, the project will also make sure the tank remains compliant with federal regulations through several agencies.
This also has no connection to conversations early this year about a special design project on the East 12th Avenue water tower. Instead of a new city logo, that project was focused on a special design highlighting one of Emporia’s unique tourism features. A KVOE News poll indicated residents wanted to see something pinpointing Emporia’s status as the founding city of Veterans Day, but the citys links to disc golf and gravel cycling were also being considered.
Speaking of the logo redesign work, the city says Aug. 12 is the deadline for artists either to submit finished ideas through www.designcrowd.com or to submit their qualifications through the city’s Request for Qualification process online at www.emporia-kansas.gov. City commissioners will then decide which method to use for the new logo. The city’s current logo, designed almost 15 years ago during the Building Futures effort, resembles the “Kansas: As Big As You Think” tourism campaign from 2005.
Over 40 designs have been submitted through the crowdsourcing option.
