Area residents are encouraged to roll up their sleeves and take part in the annual Battle of the Badges blood drive this week.
Once again, the drive will be at Twelfth Avenue Baptist Church. Hours are 12-6 pm Wednesday and Thursday and 8 am-2 pm Friday.
Red Cross spokesperson Michele Grimm says there is an urgent need for blood.
Jill Cook of the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office wants residents to put a dent in that need.
Emporia Fire Marshal Reason Bradford credited the community for its longstanding support.
Emporia Police Sgt. Dominick Vortherms says it’s a fun event. And it’s meaningful for several reasons.
As has been the case for years, donors can choose their favorite agency, whether it’s Emporia Police, Emporia Fire, Lyon County Sheriff’s Office or Lyon County Emergency Communications. Emporia Fire won last year’s popularity contest, but the area benefited from almost 230 useable units of blood.
Appointments can be set by going online to www.redcrossblood.org or by calling 800-RED-CROSS.
