Gas prices across the KVOE listening area are well above those in central and south-central Kansas.
Why?
Kansas AAA Vice President of Governmental Relations Shawn Steward says there are a few potential answers to that question.
Steward also says there can be a rather wide variance in prices from state line to state line. As of Tuesday morning, the statewide average was $3.53 a gallon — just below Emporia’s average of $3.59. Prices have been sagging since their peak in mid-June, when prices across Kansas were over $4.50 on average and setting records in the process. Right now, central and south-central Kansas are under $2.90 a gallon, while Morton County has the statewide high at $4.09 a gallon on average.
Gas prices have declined as crude oil has dipped from $130 a barrel to under $90 a barrel, even with unrest ongoing between Russia and Ukraine, and Steward says the high prices from earlier this summer forced some drivers to change their habits. Steward expects gas prices to keep falling, but that’s if we don’t have more geopolitical tensions or if we can avoid hurricanes in the Gulf of Mexico.
