With construction work set to begin on one of Emporia’s busiest roadways next week, city administration held a public meeting Tuesday night to keep the community up to speed on what’s coming.
Concrete work is set to begin Monday on US Highway 50 — 6th Avenue — from Prairie to Neosho Street as part of the annual CCLIP Road Improvement project in cooperation with the Kansas Department of Transportation. The project follows recent waterline improvement work on Sixth which impacted traffic flow for several weeks.
City Engineer Jim Ubert says residents can rest assured the impacts to traffic will be considerably less with the coming work.
One concern expressed by residents at Tuesday’s meeting was the noise created by the planned road work. Ubert again assured residents and business owners in the area that the noise will not be any worse than what they are already accustomed to.
The full scope of the project will include milling one lane at a time, asphalt overlay across five lanes of traffic and new pavement markings. The project is expected to last through mid-October, weather permitting.
