Decisions on formal charges connected to an alleged battery incident at Emporia High School will likely come next week.
Lyon County Attorney Marc Goodman is awaiting reports and related information from Emporia Police after the alleged incident Monday, announced earlier in the week as an alleged misconduct case involving at least one member of the Emporia High football team. The pink sheet as released daily to the media indicates an unspecified “personal weapon” was allegedly involved, which Police Capt. Ray Mattas says involves hands and feet as opposed to other listed weapons such as firearms, knives, blunt objects and the like.
Officers have not detailed the scope of the alleged battery. USD 253 Community Relations Director Lyndel Landgren has said concerns of this nature are reviewed by the district’s administration. Any needed steps after the review process would follow board policies.
KVOE News and KVOE Sports will have more information as this situation continues to evolve.
2:30 pm Thursday: Emporia Police turning alleged misconduct case to Lyon County Attorney for review
Emporia Police investigators are turning over reports to the Lyon County Attorney’s Office for review after an alleged battery incident at Emporia High on Monday.
Police Capt. Ray Mattas says the incident is the one listed as an alleged misconduct event involving at least one member of the Emporia High football team. Mattas says the so-called “pink sheet” is the only information officers can release on the situation and nothing else will be divulged by EPD. Earlier this week Mattas had said the initial investigation was focused on an untold number of juveniles, but the pink sheet is not stamped as a juvenile case.
The sheet indicates an unspecified “personal weapon” was allegedly involved. Mattas says that involves hands or feet. It also rules out any potential gang involvement but does not list any other details.
Lyon County Attorney Marc Goodman tells KVOE News that as of 3 pm Thursday, his office had yet to receive any documents pertaining to the case.
USD 253 Community Relations Director Lyndel Landgren says the investigation began after a currently-unspecified situation came to light. He says concerns such as the one that launched the EPD investigation are thoroughly reviewed by district administration, with appropriate steps taken that follow board policies.
This is the second allegation of abuse or misconduct regarding the football team in three years. The Board of Education terminated prior head coach Corby Milleson’s coaching contract in 2020 after allegations of verbal abuse from Milleson towards a player aired on a Topeka TV station midway through the season. The board allowed Milleson, who had coached Emporia High since 2014, to get his full coaching pay for the season.
