School is now fully in session across the KVOE listening area and that means traffic congestion is also back in full force.
During the monthly installment of KVOE’s J&J Show this past week, Emporia Police Master Patrol Officer Jaffar Agha and Officer JT Klaurens discussed the increase in both vehicle and foot traffic across school zones. Agha says when it comes to the increased congestion that accompanies the start of school, there is no real “solution” to it, drivers simply have to “plan around it.”
Officer JT Klaurens adds, that most drivers are conditioned to be extra vigilant during the early morning and afternoon hours, however, he says drivers need to be aware at all hours of the day.
Agha says residents need to remember to slow down when they enter school zones due to reduced speed limits and to never try and pass a school bus that has its stop arm extended. Agha says officers have been highly vigilant around school zones and “citations have been issued and will continue to be issued” in order to protect the safety of local children.
Separately, during Thursday’s show, Agha and Klaurens introduced the newest member of the Emporia Police Department, Hakwens Taylor. Taylor, originally came to Emporia from the Dallas, Texas area five years ago to play football at Emporia State University.
Taylor says having a lengthy list of family members in the law enforcement profession instilled a passion in him to become an officer at a very young age.
Taylor left for the police training academy in Hutchinson Sunday where he will undergo 14 weeks of training through early December.
