A semi driver was cited after an accident that downed a power line in downtown Emporia Sunday afternoon.
According to Emporia Police Sgt. Dominick Vortherms, the accident occurred at the intersection of West Logan Ave. and Commercial Street just before noon. Vortherms says the semi allegedly attempted to make a u-turn in the intersection and caught the power line.
The driver told police he was unaware he had struck anything and continued traveling causing a pole to be shifted towards the east. A power box next to the pole also sustained significant damage, however, the exact details as to how have not been announced.
The driver then left the area before authorities arrived on scene and was located shortly after. The driver’s name is not being released, however, Vortherms tells KVOE News he was cited for inattentive driving.
Traffic was closed in all directions in the intersection following the accident and was reopened roughly an hour later. Shortly after reopening, police closed the 10 block of West Logan Avenue until further notice to allow for repairs.

Traffic has been restored in all directions after an apparent hit and run, possibly involving a semi, in downtown Emporia Sunday afternoon.
East and westbound traffic at the intersection of West Logan Ave. and Commercial street was completely blocked following the accident which was reported just before noon. Emporia Police are still investigating the incident, however, initial indications are a semi was traveling either east or westbound and caught a power line leading to a power pole being pulled to the east.
The incident also led to a downed line in the intersection and the vehicle also struck and damaged a power box. Emporia Police are still working to locate the vehicle allegedly involved and are seeking the community’s help in doing so.

Emporia Police are seeking information following a reported hit-and-run incident in downtown Emporia Sunday afternoon.
Emporia Police and Emporia Fire were called to the intersection of West Logan Ave. and Commercial Street shortly before noon after a vehicle struck a power pole and power box at the intersection causing a power line to come down to the ground. Details are still pending, however, Emporia Police Sgt. Dominick Vortherms tells KVOE News they believe a semi was involved and fled the scene before authorities arrived.
The semi was either traveling east or westbound at the time of the accident and police are currently searching for the vehicle. East and westbound traffic is blocked in the intersection at this time.
Northbound traffic is being rerouted on Logan with southbound traffic being diverted at Randolph Street as they work to repair the damage. No outages have been reported in the area.
