Corner House Inc. is getting set for its next Recovery in the Park event next month.
Corner House Director Rod Shepperd announced the next installment of the community gathering will take place Saturday, Oct. 8 from 11 am to 2 pm. Ray Rodgers of Corner House says Recovery in the Park is a “community get-together” that welcomes residents of all ages and backgrounds.
For the past four decades, Corner House has been the Emporia community’s main source of rehabilitation services and resources. In recent years especially, Corner House has been highly touted for the work it has done to help those in recovery.
However; Rodgers says it wasn’t always this way in the beginning.
Rodgers says the stigma surrounding addiction did lead to a lower level of support as many originally looked at addiction as a “moral shortcoming” rather than what we know it to be today, a mental health disease. Those days thankfully are well in the past as is evident by the level of financial support Corner House receives on an annual basis.
Over the past year alone, Corner House received more than $150,000 in contributions from local government, liquor tax dollars and private contributions.
