2 pm Wednesday: Southbound I-35 traffic near Lyon County Road R-1 still down to one lane after semi wreck
Southbound traffic on Interstate 35 between Roads R-1 and U remains constricted to one lane early Wednesday afternoon after a semi crash before sunrise.
Lyon County Deputy Nathan Rankin says deputies and Emporia-Lyon County Fire/EMS responded to I-35 mile marker 136 shortly after 4:15 am after a report of an overturned semi. The driver, 31-year-old Harpreet Singh of Indianapolis, had a full load of dog food that left the highway for currently unlisted reasons. Singh lost control and the emi overturned.
Singh suffered minor injuries and declined a hospital trip afterward.
Southbound traffic was fully blocked for nearly three hours afterward.
7 am Wednesday: Southbound I-35 drivers asked to avoid semi wreck site near Lyon County Road R-1
Southbound traffic approaching Emporia on Interstate 35 will need to take other roads to either get to or through town for the time being.
Lyon County deputies have been redirecting traffic since around 4:15 am after a semi tipped over near Road R-1, or mile marker 136. No injuries were reported and the reasons behind the wreck have not been announced.
Southbound traffic was completely blocked for about two and a half hours, with traffic detoured off the Interstate at Road U, or mile marker 138. Deputy Zach Shafer says there is now one-lane traffic around the crash site, but he’s asking drivers to avoid that area because it could take much of the day before the semi is removed.
The semi was carrying 80,000 pounds of dog food when it crashed. Shafer says the truck was not affiliated with any of Emporia’s pet food production facilities.
