The 2021 Kansas Crime Index as released by the Kansas Bureau of Investigation indicates a lower crime index rate than both last year and the 10-year average, a lower property crime index than the 10-year average and murder or other violent index crimes above the 10-year-average.
Overall, the crime index rate — or number of crimes per 1,000 people — decreased over eight percent to 27.2 last year. Property crimes were over 14 percent below the 10-year average, but the 173 murders were over 22 percent above the 10-year average and the violent index crimes (aggravated assault or battery, murder, rape and robbery) were almost 18 percent above the 10-year-average.
Last year, Lyon County, including Emporia and Americus police departments, had 309 crime index offenses and 48 violent crime offenses, including 11 rapes, three robberies and 34 aggravated assaults or batteries. For property crimes, there were 35 burglaries, 208 thefts and 18 motor vehicle thefts. Six arson incidents were reported.
