Lyon County’s 2023 budget totals just over $36 million and after extensive review, the county’s mill levy will not see an increase this year.
Those were the highlights from the county commission’s weekly action meeting where commissioners approved the finalization of the budget Thursday morning. At the start of the budget process, the commission was looking at a more than eight mill increase over the previous fiscal year.
Thankfully, commissioners managed to widdle the final levy down to 53.280 mills. Commissioner Doug Peck says it was not an easy process to do so and tells KVOE News this year’s budget will be “tight” but “effective.”
Prior to approving the budget commissioners also approved a resolution to exceed the revenue neutral rate for the coming fiscal year. During discussions on the matter, Commissioner Scott Briggs stated he “struggles” to see the need for the RNR process.
Briggs says he understands the state’s reasoning for increasing transparency amongst taxpayers, however, he says transparency has never been an issue in Lyon County.
Briggs summed up his feelings saying the RNR is simply an “extra step” and an unnecessary one at that.
Both items were approved unanimously.
The Lyon County Commission will reconvene for its weekly action meeting next Thursday at 9 am inside of the Lyon County Courthouse Commission Chambers.
