If you receive a call from somebody allegedly with the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, there’s a chance you’re actually getting a scam call.
The KBI says it has received calls indicating its phone number has been spoofed, where callers use a legitimate phone number on caller ID displays to disguise their identity and purpose.
The KBI says it may call you related to a case or to arrange interviews, but it will not make unexpected calls to ask for Social Security numbers, birthdates, account numbers or similar information. It also tells you never to give personal information unless you initiate the call. If a caller is acting suspicious, it’s OK to hang up and research the number to make sure it’s legitimate.
If you have been spoofed, report it to the Federal Communications Corporation.
