For the 15th year, the Red Rocks State Historic Site played host to an afternoon of poetry and literary celebration Sunday.
The 15th annual Poetry on the Porch, hosted by former Kansas Poet Laureate Kevin Rabas, saw recent award-winning poet Brenda White take to the porch as the featured presenter. White’s first book of poems, Blue Collar Saint, recently won the Kansas Notable Book Award.
White was one of 100 individuals to submit her works for the honor and says it was exciting for her works to be recognized.
Following White’s presentation, the event became an open mic where any and all were welcome to take the microphone and share their works. Rabas says having the open mic component to the event is one way they continue to grow the local poetry community.
Red Rocks is the home of William Allen White where, in addition to penning his own celebrated works, he hosted the likes of President Theodore Roosevelt, HG Wells and Albert Einstein.
