The City of Emporia may be nearing the end of its new logo design process, however, some changes will be needed before the new design is formally approved.
During the commission’s regular study meeting Wednesday, commissioners chose to move forward with further refinement of the logo presented by Lot and Illk two weeks ago. Mayor Becky Smith stated during the meeting she was not in favor of the current option as it too closely resembles other recognizable logos.
Commissioner Jamie Sauder stated he liked the option as he felt it correctly captured the characteristics and history of the Emporia community.
Commissioner Susan Brinkman also stated she was in favor of the proposed logo and commissioner Erren Harter stated he would like to see some minor alterations before signing off on the design. Staff has been instructed to continue the refinement process with an updated option set to be presented to commissioners at a later time.
In other business, commissioners discussed the potential for the allowance of chickens within residential areas of the city. No process has been approved, however, the proposed plan is to allow the possession of chickens within residential properties with a few restrictions according to City Attorney Christina Montgomery.
Residents will only be permitted to own four hens, no roosters will be permitted. Home Owner Association policies will supersede the city’s policy on chicken ownership. Commissioners could approve the policy during their next regular meeting.
Separately during their action session Wednesday morning, commissioners approved the issuance of a conditional use permit for a telecommunications tower related to the Evergy relocation in far west Emporia. The permit is for the use of a 320-foot tower and will be valid for five years.
Additionally, commissioners approved the vacation of an easement for the Emporia Pavillions project. According to City Zoning Specialist Justin Givens, the easement was platted with no utilities currently in place.
One of the several new stores as part of the Pavillions development is set to be constructed on the easement.
Emporia City Commissioners will reconvene for their bi-weekly action and study meeting Wednesday, Nov. 2 at 11 am inside of the Municipal Courtroom at White Auditorium.
