Funeral arrangements have been announced for a beloved and heavily involved community member who passed away earlier this week.
Dorine Harter passed away Monday, Oct. 24 at the age of 80. Harter was born and raised in Urmia, Iran and was one of six children of Andrew and Magdelata Dilak.
Harter came to the United States in 1968 where she attended Wooster College in Ohio before relocating to Emporia in 1969 to complete her education at Emporia State University where she attained her Bachelor’s and Masters’s degrees in business administration.
Harter was also heavily involved within the Emporia community throughout her life serving on numerous boards and committees including serving as a past president of the Emporia Friends of the Zoo, a member of the Altrusa Club of Emporia and the 5th Judicial Community Corrections Committee just to name a few.
Harter’s longtime friend Jean Tidwell says her care and compassion for others were unmatched.
Tidwell says Harter’s passing will leave a large hole in the community.
Harter is preceded in death by her parents and her husband of 40 years James. Harter is survived by her three sons, Erren, Pierre and Derrek, three daughters-in-law and eight grandchildren.
A celebration of life will be held at First United Methodist Church Saturday, Nov. 5 at 1 pm. The service will be live-streamed via www.fumchurch.org. Cremation is planned.
