Honor Flight crams a lot into two days, and those who went on the USD 252 Southern Lyon County trip this week — the 10th one organized by the district — say they could have spent more time in and around the nation’s capital.
Army veteran Dale Hodges served in the early 1960s. He was interested in seeing a lot of the memorials, and he was awestruck.
Larry Short, an Army veteran who served in Vietnam, was understandably interested in seeing the Vietnam Memorial. He was impressed.
Army veteran Don Wamser served during Vietnam, and he tells KVOE News he had been interested in being part of the trip for several years. He says his experience was above and beyond what he expected. He also says Honor Flight is a far cry from the treatment he received when he came back from Vietnam.
Army Signal Corps veteran Dave Hough served in the early 1960s. He says parts of the trip were “staggering,” even though has been to Washington, DC before. He says Honor Flight highlighted a lesson he learned during his service.
Despite the packed schedule, Hartford student Elizabeth Kelley says it was tough to end the trip.
Olpe student Grace Markowitz went last year and couldn’t wait to return.
The program pairs veterans with students on a two-day trip to Washington DC and back to see a host of memorials and other national attractions, both in the nation’s capital and nearby.
