Wabaunsee County authorities say a North Carolina man tried to meet with an underage person for illegal purposes.
The Sheriff’s Office says deputies were made aware of a possible child exploitation effort on Halloween. Deputies and Wabaunsee County detectives went to the 400 block of East Flint Hills Drive at Lake Wabaunsee, where they met 20-year-old Derrick Mayfield of Henderson, North Carolina.
Mayfield allegedly flew from North Carolina to meet with a young Wabaunsee County resident after allegedly contacting the girl online. Deputies say there was evidence at the scene, which led them to arrest Mayfield on suspicion of aggravated indecent liberties, contributing to a child’s misconduct and unlawful visual depiction of a child, who was “made safe and taken into protective custody” afterward.
Mayfield has subsequently been charged with three counts of aggravated indecent liberties and one count of sexual exploitation. A preliminary hearing is set for Nov. 14 in Alma.
