ELECTION: Republicans sweep Lyon County positions

Lyon County’s midterm elections saw Mark Schreiber and Eric Smith re-elected to their seats, while there will be new representation for part of the Lyon County Commission.

Lyon County voters re-elected Schreiber, a Republican, to the Kansas House 60th District after a challenge from Democrat Mic McGuire 3,589 votes to 2,866. Schreiber says legislation associated with judicial selection is a topic he expects to see a high level of conversation over the next year.

McGuire declined an interview after the results were finalized, but he says he congratulated Schreiber afterward.In the House 76th District, Smith, a Republican defeated Democrat Chuck Torres in all three district counties. Smith says lawmakers will be focused on the economy when they return to session in January.

Torres says he was told this was going to be a challenge but he does not regret continuing and focus his platform on giving the people a choice.

Ken Duft, a Republican, defeated Democrat Gregg Stair 1,581 votes to 1,453 to claim the Lyon County Commission seat. Duft says he was pleased with his campaign.

Stair says that his main goal was to get people out to vote.

Duft will replace longtime commissioner Scott Briggs who says it was a great race between two great candidates.

Also, Judge Lee Fowler was retained overwhelmingly.

The unofficial voter turnout for Lyon County was 47.49 percent according to Election Officer Tammy Vopat. Additionally Vopat says there were between 95-100 provisional ballots, well below the more than 300 in the primary election.

Vopat says it was a successful night.

The official vote canvas will take place Wednesday at 9 am inside the Lyon County Courthouse Commission Chambers.
