Less than half the cats brought to the Emporia Animal Shelter as part of a massive emergency intake a month ago are still at the shelter, but that doesn’t mean most of the pets have been adopted.
In fact, Humane Society of the Flint Hills Director Stephanie Achille — KVOE’s Newsmaker guest Wednesday — says very few cats have gone through the adoption process.
The 80 cats and two dogs were brought to the shelter after a check welfare call at 887 West Fifth last month. It has been listed as the shelter’s largest intake on record.
All the pets are medically cleared after treatments for fleas, parasites and maggots. Achille says both dogs have been adopted and about 25 cats are still at the shelter. Achille says the shelter has been holding “buy one, get one” specials for the cats over the past month, and another one is coming this weekend. Residents can get two cats for $25.
Separately, the Animal Shelter recently got a large donation of straw to benefit outdoor pets and it still has about half the original donation left. Residents have also been donating a lot of items connected to the emergency intake, including food, litter, flea treatments and money. Achille says toys, blankets, towels and other items are still needed. For more information, call the shelter at 620-340-6345.
