The David Traylor Zoo will be lighting up for the holiday season Tuesday night and the entire community is invited to come watch them flip the switch.
The annual Happy Holidaze lighting ceremony will take place at the zoo beginning at 5 pm. Zoo Director Lisa Keith says this year has more than 20,000 feet of lights wrapping around the zoo.
Keith adds that 95 percent of those lights have now been converted to LED. The transition from traditional lights to LEDs has been a longtime mission of the zoo the past several years.
Along with zoo staff and residents, Tuesday will also see several special guests on hand including Santa Clause, Rudolph, The Grinch, the Emporia High School Chorale and the Emporia Police Department Benefit Association for the zoo’s annual toy drive. This year’s light switchers will be the grandchildren of Rick and Colleen Mitchell.
The lighting is scheduled to occur between 5:45 and 6 pm. KVOE will be broadcasting from Happy Holidaze from 4:30 pm to 6 pm.
