Tuesday morning about three o’clock I had an epiphany or sudden revelation that helped my attitude in a major way.
I was planning a throwaway “Something” about the so-called Bacon University. The last thought was something cute about not frying bacon in the nude.
My revelation was about something I need to include in my talk at noon today to the 55 Earl Sauder Scholar Athletes at their annual luncheon.
I always tell them stories about my dad and mom and how the scholarship got started and the part about dad not being allowed to come to Emporia because as the oldest son in the dirty thirties he was needed at home on the farm and the irony of him becoming a large donor to an institution he couldn’t attend.
In the past, I’ve finished by suggesting that being a Sauder Scholar is good resume stuff especially if they work in that Athletic Director Kent Weiser always mentions that only “the best and brightest” are approved for this award.
Back to my epiphany.
What came to me is that I’ve been missing an opportunity by not selling them on finding work and a career here in Emporia.
That is especially true right now as both Emporia State and Emporia the community are reinvesting themselves positively.
The University’s reinvestment will be our topic on the On-Air Chat at ten this morning here on KVOE or on our Audio Vault later today.
Emporia is undertaking its changes in a far less painful manner with several retirements and a new job. Consequently, we have a new City Manager and new RDA Director replacing retirees. When Rob Gilligan left he forced the selection of a new city commissioner and a new Ignite Emporia Director.
The interesting news my student audience will learn is all the new folks have brought new ideas and vigor to their jobs and Emporia’s future is really bright, so why not check out Emporia opportunities?
I’m positive there is not a bad apple in the group because my dad would have objected!!
