The state of Kansas has secured another multi-million-dollar payout as part of settlement agreements on opioid medicines.
Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt says the state is getting at least $77 million combined as part of separate agreements with CVS and Walgreens. Nationally, the settlements total almost $11 billion.
This follows a $3 billion national settlement with Walmart announced last month. Kansas is getting at least $15 million from that settlement and may get more.
Proceeds from the settlements must be used for treatment and recovery services for people struggling with opioid addictions, while the companies must have “robust” oversight to halt fraudulent prescriptions or suspicious prescription requests.
In other news from the Attorney General’s Office, the state has finalized a settlement with JUUL Labs resulting a nearly $10 million payment after a two-year investigation into the company’s marketing and sales practices targeting youths — who can’t legally use the e-cigarettes — and misrepresenting the amount of nicotine in pods.
