In addition to searching for the suspect believed to be involved in Thursday night’s fatal hit and run in downtown Emporia, Emporia Police are now seeking information on potential witnesses to the incident.
According to Emporia Police Captain Lisa Hayes, Emporia Police, as part of their investigation, have come to learn that a dark-colored SUV was in the immediate vicinity at the time of the collision just after 7:20 pm. At this time authorities cannot say to what extent the SUV may be involved in the case aside from potentially witnessing the incident.
Hayes also says they have learned that another individual, possibly a Hispanic male, may have been walking with the victim at the time he was struck by a vehicle allegedly driven by 29-year-old Angel Manuel Alvarado of Emporia. The new information comes as EPD continues its search for Alvarado who is listed as a Hispanic male, 4’11”, approximately 145 pounds with black hair and brown eyes.
Anyone with information on Alvarado’s whereabouts or the identity of the suspected witnesses to the incident are asked to contact Emporia Police by calling 620-343-4225. Lyon County Crime Stoppers is also offering a reward of up to $1,000 for any information leading the arrest and conviction of those involved.

Noon Friday: Crime Stoppers offering reward as search for Alvarado continues
Lyon County Crime Stoppers has now announced a reward as Emporia Police officers continue their search for the suspect in a fatal hit-and-run near downtown Emporia on Thursday evening.
Crime Stoppers has announced a reward of up to $1,000 in the case of 29-year-old Angel Manuel Alvarado. Residents with information can call Emporia Police at 620-343-4225 or Crime Stoppers at 620-342-2273. They can also submit tips through the P3Tips mobile app or p3tips.com. Rewards will paid only if information leads to Alvarado’s arrest and conviction in this case.
Besides Emporia Police, deputies from Lyon and Coffey counties and troopers with the Kansas Highway Patrol have been involved in the investigation.

10 am Friday: Suspect sought in Emporia fatal hit-and-run
Emporia Police is searching for a suspect involved in a pedestrian hit-and-run fatality Thursday evening, and officers have confirmed two separate investigation sites are connected as their investigation continues.
EPD is searching for 29-year-old Angel Manuel Alvarado of Emporia. Alvarado is 4’11”, weighs approximately 145 pounds, and has black hair and brown eyes.
Lyon County Emergency Communications received a report of a car striking a pedestrian at 6th and Constitution. Alvarado then put the pedestrian into the vehicle and then drove to 4th and Congress where he got out of the vehicle and fled on foot leaving the pedestrian in the vehicle.
The pedestrian was transported to Newman Regional Health where he was pronounced dead. The victim’s name is not being released at the moment pending positive identification and notification of kin.
Alvarado was convicted in January 2012 of indecent liberties with a child between ages 14 and 16 as well aso drug-related crimes. He was also convicted in September 2012 on a drug distribution charge. He’s on the Kansas offender registry for the sex and drug distribution crimes.

5:04 a.m. Friday: Investigation continues in incident near downtown Emporia.
Emporia Police officers continue investigating a developing incident that originated near downtown Emporia on Thursday night.
Emporia Police Lt. Tim Wacker confirms there was a vehicle-pedestrian collision at Sixth and Constitution that was initially reported at Fourth and Constitution around 7:20 pm. Emporia Fire says an ambulance took one person to Newman Regional Health, but Wacker says the pedestrian later died.
Law enforcement have also been investigating at a house on Fourth between Congress and Constitution, with traffic detoured around that block and police tape up during the investigation into the fatality incident. Authorities have not confirmed any connection to the two investigations and they have not confirmed the nature of their investigation on West Fourth. In fact, no additional information is being released until Emporia Police issues a statement, which may be at some time Friday.
West Sixth, also known as West US Highway 50, was closed between Merchant and Congress for almost exactly three hours after the fatality incident.

9:20 pm Thursday: West US Highway 50 closed between Merchant and Congress after injury incident at Fourth and Constitution
Law enforcement has blocked off a two-block stretch of West Sixth Avenue as part of an investigation into a reported injury crash near downtown Emporia on Thursday evening.
Emporia Police, Lyon County deputies and Kansas Highway Patrol troopers shut down West Sixth, also known as West US Highway 50, between Merchant and Congress after the crash — which was actually reported near Fourth and Constitution. Emporia Fire confirms one person was taken to Newman Regional Health for treatment but has not confirmed whether a male or female was transported and has not divulged the severiry of injuries.
There is no additional information about the incident, which was reported around 7:20 pm. Police officers on scene say it could be a significant time before information is released. There is also no information on when West Sixth can reopen to normal traffic flow.

7:45 pm Thursday: One person to Newman Regional Health after incident in central Emporia
One person has been taken to Newman Regional Health after a reported crash just west of downtown Emporia.
Emporia Police and Emporia Fire responded to an incident at Fourth and Constitution shortly before 7:30 pm. Incident details are currently pending.
