A porch and apartment unit were damaged following a fire at an east Emporia apartment complex Thursday afternoon.
According to Emporia Fire Captain Greg Davis, crews from Emporia, Olpe and Americus were called to 1001 Mary Street, the Bluestem Apartments complex, around 2:20 pm. Emporia firefighters noted light smoke coming from the front door and later found a smoldering fire of unknown origin on the rear balcony.
The fire spread to the basement apartment, but firefighters got it out with minimal damage. The porch had moderate damage and was taped off.
There were no injuries. Residents were evacuated for about an hour.
There was evidence of a water main break in the 1000 block of Michelle about 3 pm, and the city confirmed a break about 30 minutes later. Water service was restored around 5:30 pm. It’s unclear if the water main break affected the firefighting response.
A reported water main break in the 2400 block of West 12th was unfounded, according to the city.

Emporia, Americus and Olpe fire crews remain on scene of a reported structure fire in east Emporia.
Crews were called to 1001 Mary Street, the Bluestem Apartments complex, shortly after 2:20 pm. Details are limited, however, there was light smoke coming from the second floor of the apartment in question.
Residents were evacuated from the building as crews arrived, however, additional information including damages, cause, origination point and injuries is currently pending. Traffic on 10th between Michelle and Mary is blocked as crews remain at the scene.
