In a way, you could say Kansas lawmakers are about to begin their regular season.
The 2023 legislative session launches Jan. 9, and with that in mind, KVOE began legislative previews with lawmakers representing Lyon County as part of the Morning Show on Monday. Kansas House 60th District Representative Mark Schreiber of Emporia says one topic of lawmaker interest revolves around Emporia State University’s financial situation.
Lawmakers could revisit certain policy points from past years, including abortion rights after voters chose not to support the so-called Value Them Both amendment designed to shift rules and regulation oversight from the Kansas Supreme Court to the Legislature.
Schreiber says Medicaid expansion will be looked at, although he considers approval a longshot. He also sees hefty discussion ahead on the future of medical marijuana.
Schreiber is the Vice Chair of the Judiciary Committee. He also serves on the Education; Energy, Utilities and Telecommunications; and the Legislature Modernization committees.
17th District Senator Jeff Longbine will be on KVOE’s Morning Show at 8:20 am Wednesday, followed by House 76th District Representative Eric Smith at 8:40 am Thursday. 13th District Representative Duane Droge, who is taking over for Joe Newland as Newland leads the Kansas Farm Bureau, will be chatting with KVOE News later this month.
