As Flint Hills Technical College gets ready for the start of the spring semester next week, college administrators are planning to launch a new program soon.
For months, President Caron Daugherty has been promoting an early childcare education program. The college’s Board of Trustees formally approved the program and the hire of Nancy Robinson as its first director.
On KVOE’s Tech Talk on Tuesday, Daugherty said this is a program designed to meet a growing local need.
The program will educate students to become professionals in working with kids from infant to kindergarten-ready, with emphasis points on helping children with cognitive, social, emotional and physical development. Once approved by the Kansas Board of Regents, the program will offer an associate of applied science and a certificate. The goal is to start classes this upcoming August.
Daugherty says Robinson brings a range of early childhood education experience, including special needs, to the position as well as connections to Emporia State University and what Daugherty calls the “professional” side of education.
Classes begin Jan. 17. Educators return to work this week.
