Emporia State’s King Lake has a fresh batch of rainbow trout.
Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks says about 1,000 trout went put into the lake Thursday.
This is actually the first stocking of rainbow trout as part of an ongoing partnership between Emporia State and Wildlife and Parks. It follows the decision back in April to make King Lake available as a public fishing site for other fish species like channel catfish, crappie and largemouth bass. Anglers need fishing licenses to use the lake.
This also follows a study done by Emporia State students in Dr. Rachel Bowes’ fish ecology class involving biologists from Wildlife and Parks, including the prospect of adding rainbow trout for winter fishing opportunities. The fishery is now managed by ESU fish ecology and fisheries management students with guidance from Wildlife and Parks.
Residents can get to King Lake by using the Interstate 35 underpass off Highland Street. They can also use Burlingame Road to get to East 18th Avenue and drive west on 18th.
