Many hands make light work — unless refrigerators are involved.
Regardless, a group of around 10 volunteers, including law enforcement, the Red Cross and community members, moved food — and fridges — from the Salvation Army’s longstanding food pantry site in the basement at 327 Constitution to the former chapel upstairs. Food pantry manager Brian Shintaku appreciated the help. There are a few things yet to do before the space is ready to help those in need.
The move helps clients who may be handicapped or have difficulty making stairs. An adjusted layout also makes it easier for Salvation Army staff and volunteers to serve residents who need the food.
Shintaku says the food pantry is generally in good shape, but there are a few immediate needs now, including pasta sauces, dried fruit, frozen vegetables and crackers.
