The Osage City Police Department says it’s investigating a recent run of catalytic converter thefts.
Officers say they have written reports involving at least three thefts. Officers also say stealing a converter means thieves have to get under the targeted vehicle and “probably…make some noise” in the process.
Osage City residents who see any suspicious activity, including potential converter thefts, should call the police department at 785-828-3131. Residents are asked not to confront theft suspects. Residents are also asked to at least consider installing a surveillance camera at their homes or businesses.
Catalytic converters have been occasional theft targets because of the presence of precious metals inside, including platinum, palladium and rhodium — which are worth thousands of dollars per ounce. Even with a few grams of precious metals inside, catalytic converters can bring hundreds of dollars to thieves.
