The Emporia High basketball teams swept Hayden in Topeka Tuesday night.
The Spartans needed a defensive rebound and a 1 of 2 trip to the free throw line by Cooper Rech with .3 left in the game to give them a 39-38 victory.
Emporia High led by as many as seven in the first quarter and led 10-8 before Hayden took a 21-16 lead at halftime. The Wildcats led 30-26 at the end of the third quarter.
Coach Lee Baldwin says the win was big for his team.
Parker Leeds led Emporia High with 11 points. The Emporia High boys are now 11-5 on the season and 4-2 in Centennial League.
The Emporia High girls won their matchup with Hayden, 44-32.
The Lady Spartans trailed 3-2, regained the lead and never gave it up.
Coach Carolyn Dorsey says it was a good bounce-back win after back-to-back losses.
Addie Kirmer led Emporia High with 16 points. The Lady Spartans are now 13-3 on the season and 4-2 in Centennial League.
Up next for the Spartans and Lady Spartans is a home doubleheader Friday against Topeka High.
