With the home stretch of the swimming and diving season approaching, one Emporia High Spartan had his season cut short prior to Thursday’s Centennial League meet.
Senior Braxton Higgins will not be able to defend his state championship or his Centennial League championship in diving due to an injury. Higgins felt some pain near his tailbone area several weeks ago and that’s when he needed to take action and get it checked out. He was told he needed immediate surgery.
Higgins holds the Emporia High records in both 6-dive and 11-dive. Even with this being a minor bump in the road for Higgins, he’s exploring his options of continuing his diving career in college.
Both Alex Allemang and Kager Ochs will be competing in Thursday’s Centennial League diving meet.
On the swim side, sophomore Will Walker is one of the Spartan swimmers that has confidence heading into the league meet. This is the Spartans’ last chance to get consideration or automatic times into the state meet. Walker says it’s an opportunity to improve on their previous best times.
The Centennial League meet is being hosted by Emporia High but will be contested at Capitol Federal Natatorium in Topeka. Diving takes place at 1 p.m. with swim events to follow at 4 p.m.
