Over the past 40 years, the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation has generated funds to improve habitat and other conditions. That work has paid dividends, according to Flint Hills Chapter President Lance Fullerton — who tells KVOE News the Kansas herd is in good shape.
Fullerton’s comments came during the chapter’s annual auction at the Lyon County Fairgrounds Anderson Building. He credits volunteers from different chapters in Kansas, Missouri and Oklahoma to plan different projects and also research ways to improve herd health. In fact, with the herd again well-established in Kansas, the main concern actually may be increased elk-vehicle traffic as the herd expands both in number and in coverage area.
Final fundraising totals should be announced over the next week.
