In just the eight months since the doors opened to Crosswinds Counseling and Wellness’ new Spanish center, it has already managed to make a large impact in the local community.
Crosswinds CEO Amanda Cunningham says since the official ribbon cutting for Centro Hispano de Crosswinds occurred last June, the center has already provided services to right around 380 Spanish-speaking residents. Furthermore, Crosswinds Development Director Lucas Moody says staff have taken the center’s services beyond its doors into the local community.
Cunningham says the Hispanic population has historically had an aversion to seeking mental health services due to cultural stigma. Cunningham says the opening of Centro Hispano was meant to help reduce that stigma within the local Hispanic community, however, they did not want it to stop there.
The opening of Centro Hispano de Crosswinds was made possible thanks to a two-year $2.3 million federal grant. At this time, the center is staffed with a case manager, clinician, peer support and customer service representatives all of whom are fluent in Spanish.
Cunningham tells KVOE News they are hoping to add at least one more staff member with the potential for more growth as it is needed. For more information about the Centro Hispano of CrossWinds Counseling & Wellness call 620-343-2211.
