Unsettled weather is the best way to describe the period through Thursday.
Showers and embedded thunderstorms are guaranteed through mid-afternoon areawide. The afternoon period also includes a marginal risk of severe weather, mainly for hail but a brief isolated tornado can’t be ruled out. Up to half an inch of rainfall is likely.
Another storm system brings winter back to the Central Plains on Wednesday night and Thursday morning, with a wintry mix of rain, sleet and snow likely Wednesday night before changing to all snow after midnight. Up to three inches of snowfall is possible areawide, with areas west and north of Emporia getting slightly higher totals. Any snow that develops will be blown around by northerly winds gusting as high as 40 mph, so travel will be significantly impacted even with relatively light snow totals. Overnight lows will be in the mid-teens and wind chills may approach -10 before sunrise Thursday.
