Whenever snow and ice are falling, it’s generally not a good idea to travel. It’s definitely not a good idea to lead a high-speed chase, but both the Geary and Wabaunsee county sheriff’s offices say they were involved in a pursuit in wintry driving conditions Thursday.
The Wabaunsee County Sheriff’s Office says the chase actually began in Geary County and moved into Wabaunsee County at “high rates of speed” with “hazardous” environmental conditions at the time of the incident, which began shortly before 11:30 am. Wabaunsee County Corporal Jon Sumner used stop sticks to disable the SUV, leading to the arrest of Topeka resident Destynee L Thomas without further incident.
The Geary County Sheriff’s Office says deputies were working a crash when the SUV moved past, nearly hitting a patrol cruiser. A deputy tried to stop the vehicle for failing to move over for emergency traffic, but Thomas allegedly took off at normal highway speeds before her arrest in Wabaunsee County.
Deputies say Thomas was taken to the Geary County Jail. There were no injuries and property damage reported. Formal charges are pending.
The Kansas Highway Patrol helped during the incident.
