Come Wednesday, Raise Your Paws will take in animals needing quarantine after bite situations.
As KVOE News reported Thursday, Lyon County is now working with Raise Your Paws in downtown Emporia after a longstanding partnership with the Emporia Animal Shelter and Humane Society of the Flint Hills. Raise Your Paws owner Melanie Smith says she and her staff are ready for whatever might come.
The contract also includes three guaranteed bed spaces for quarantine purposes with more “surge capacity” if needed in emergency situations. Deputies will also have 24-7 access if needed.
Smith says the new contract shouldn’t affect the normal Raise Your Paws business in most circumstances, and she tells KVOE News there will be regular reviews to see if the contract needs any adjustments when it’s time to discuss an extension.
Meanwhile, the Humane Society continues its animal quarantine contract with the city of Emporia through April 2024. Humane Society Director Stephanie Achille says she is pleased more animals will be helped and she wishes both the county and Raise Your Paws good luck in the new partnership. She also believes Raise Your Paws’ licensing will “prove very helpful to our community.”
